Subject Line: Why I Hired Another Coach
Preview Text: Opportunity vs. Limiting Beliefs

Body:

Hi Sonya,

A few months ago, I got asked to speak at a retirement conference in Las Vegas. A big one.

I should have been excited.

After all, it was an amazing opportunity to learn and connect, which is what I’m all about.

And I love talking about retirement. It’s literally what I do.

But as I looked over the impressive list of other speakers, I didn’t feel excited.

I felt scared.

When my husband congratulated me, I shrugged and finally let it out.

“I’m not good at public speaking!”

The thing is, I LOVE talking to people. One-on-one. In small groups. Heck, even in big groups.

But presenting to a room full of people? Nope.

“I’m a personal coach. Not a public speaker. It’s just not a good fit.”

My husband asked what I’d be speaking about.

“The four things everyone should do in the year before they retire.”

“Well, that sounds like it could help a lot of people. Especially with such a big platform.”

I groaned. He was right.

“You should hire a coach.”

Another groan. Right again. Enough already!

When I explained it all to James, my new public speaking coach, he was completely unfazed.

“Public speaking is just a skill. It’s like any other skill, you just have to learn it.”

And that’s what I did. Every week, we worked on it. Prepared for my presentation. Practiced it.

So, how did it go?

Well, I’m on a plane and headed to Las Vegas – to the event. But no matter how it goes, the experience has already taught (or reminded me of) a lot!

Like:

  • I’m all about learning and connecting, but I’m also here to serve. If there’s an unhelpful fear or skill gap that’s getting in the way of that, I’m going to conquer it and live the most purposeful life possible.

  • I will always, always invest in myself and protect my time. I could’ve watched a bunch of videos and read books, and tried to get it together before the conference. But I can guarantee that it would’ve taken 100x more effort and that I wouldn’t feel as confident as I do right now.

  • Speaking of confidence, it turns out that I’m actually a pretty good public speaker (according to James). It made me wonder…what opportunities have I missed out on, or not even considered, because of a false story I was telling myself (like “I’m not good at public speaking!”). What other false stories am I still carrying?

Have you ever recognized that a limiting belief you had about yourself wasn’t true at all? Reply and let me know- I would love to hear about it.

And if you’re interested in making life after retirement your most purposeful, confident era yet – if you’re ready to demolish false limiting beliefs and open yourself up to opportunities you haven’t imagined yet – I’ll be back from Vegas on Friday, and you can [book a coaching discovery call here].

Invest in yourself. Believe me, it’s a great feeling.

Wish Me Luck,
Natalie
