Strong Kids Gym in an indoor activity center with supervised play for kids.

This email was part of a sequence sent to parents who have expressed interest but not yet visited the gym.

It addresses a common objection: parents who are afraid their kids won’t behave well if they bring them in.

Hi Katherine,

I first met Sarah when she brought her (super cool) son Zach, 5, in for a free trial visit.

It was Open Rec hour for 4-6 year-olds.

Eleven kids were making their rounds throughout the Strong Kids space, climbing the play gym, experimenting in the interactive STEM area, and starting a shared ocean-themed collage on the arts table.

Zach was pumped, but Sarah seemed nervous as she filled out the sign-up form.

“So I don’t go with him?”

I explained to her that most parents just sit in our comfy parents’ lounge, featuring bistro tables and even a cappuccino machine.

She looked doubtful.

“It’s just… he doesn’t always do great in groups.” I nodded.

“Believe me, I get it. And my staff gets it. We don’t expect every kid to do great in groups. Especially on their first visit.”

Zach headed into the kids space, looking back for permission. Sarah bravely smiled and waved.

“Sometimes he gets nervous and then acts out and…I mean, he threw a full-blown fit at the last playgroup I brought him to. I just want him to, you know..”

“Have a good experience.” She nodded. I wanted that, too. AND I wanted her to have a good experience.

Not just because I’m the owner. But because I’m a person. And a mom who has SO been there.

As we watched Zach, I could see the pattern she talked about. Playing with the other kids, he seemed excited but also nervous and maybe oversimulated, as he threw a ball against the wall.

Steph went over to Zach and offered to play catch with him. Before long, a few other kids were playing, too- the vibe was laid-back and relaxing.

I wanted to explain to Sarah that this is what we’re all about- an attentive, caring staff that loves helping kids experience kindness and believe in themselves.

And to tell her that it could’ve gone the other way- that he could’ve thrown a fit, and that would have been ok, too.

We see fits all the time. No biggie.

But I didn’t say any of that, because I didn’t want to sound like I was trying to sell her something, and anyway, sometimes seeing is believing.

We watched Zach have a great time for the whole hour, exploring the gym with glee before leading two new friends over to the ocean collage.

Sarah signed Zach up for classes and rec twice a week.

And as rewarding as it’s been watching him develop fantastic social and leadership skills, it’s also been great to see Sarah come in and relax.

She’s still waving to Zach from the Parents Lounge, but she’s often doing it while chatting with other parents, or enjoying some alone time – and a cappuccino.

Till Next Time,
Lisa
